Being in the hospital sucks ass. At age 28 I was diagnosed with DVT in my right leg. They never could explain to me what exactly brought this on. They just had some ideas. Maybe the oral contraceptives, maybe the 3 flights I went on last summer (with weeks in between each), maybe you go back to medical school! Now I have to live with shrunken veins and can't sit for too long, including for a 2 hour movie. But it could have been worse. A piece of the clot could have broken off and I could have gotten a PE and in that case would not be telling this story.
I did my own research after the fact and found things I could have done to prevent it.
1-Warming spices: spices like cayenne pepper, cinnamon, ginger, etc., thin the blood and promote good circulation. Things with vitamin K thicken the blood. Vitamin K is found in leafy greens, lettuce, kale, spinach, cabbage, etc.
2-Be active: especially on airline flights. Get up and walk around every 30-40 minutes!
3-Avoid foods or supplements with estrogen, e.g. birth control pills.
4-Support hoes: these are EXTRA uncomfortable in the summer but I rock 'em!
Most importantly, if you think something is wrong, get a second opinion and don't wait. It only gets worse with time until its being treated with anti-coagulants.
Have a great life and make it count!
